In this way Volume I will present the main paths of the evolution of English consonantism, vocalism and inflections (declension and conjugation) from the earliest recoverable times (from Proto-Indo-European wherever possible) down to Old English. Word formation (together with apophony and comparison of adjectives and adverbs) as well as syntax will be treated in the second volume of the Grammar.

(...) First, to give a clear, lucid, coherent picture of the prehistoric bases of Old English grammar in structural terms. (Concomitantly, this will show the student how theoretical principles of modern linguistics are applied to one concrete, particular language.)
Second, to concentrate on these processes and to illustrate them by such examples from Old English as have left traces in Modern English. (This in turn, it is hoped, will help the student to make better use of etymological, dictionaries of Modern English with full understanding.)
Third, to utilize Slavic and Polish material (cognates, etc.) for comparative purposes, which has never been done in an Old English grammar to such an extent. (…)
