Początek XX wieku, poważny dystyngowany dżentelmen przekazuje w barze wiadomośc dla kogos o nazwisku Hall, wścibski barman czyta ją ukradkiem. Nagle znajdujemy sie w latach obecnych Hannon Fuller (ten sam dżentelmen którego oglądalismy w scenie poprzedniej) budzi sie w pomieszczeniu pełnym komputerów i urządzeń. Udaje się do baru skąd dzwoni i nagrywa sie na sekretarke Halla, chwile potem zostaje zamordowany. Douglas Hall młody i odważny programista prowadzący wraz z Fullerem doświadczenia nad stworzeniem wirtualnego świata żyjącego własnym życiem ( w którym "żyją" odpowiedniki ludzi istniejących w realnym świecie) jest wstząśnięty śmiercią przyjaciela. Powiadomiony przez wspólpracownika Whitneya udaje sie w podróż na początek wieku usiłując rozwiązać zagadke smierci sowjego mentora. Ma na to tylko dwie godziny bo tylko na tyle zaprogramowany jest system. Stacza tam walkę z odpowiednikiem Whitneya-Ashtonem (barman), ten zawiadamia go że wie iż jego świat jest tylko iluzją (udał sie za granicę miasta w którym mieszkał i napotkał "granicę" z siatki elektronowej - zgodnie z instrukcją zawartą w notatce odpowiednika Fullera). W realnym swiecie tajemnicę smierci usiłuje rozwiązać czarnoskóry detektyw McBain, pojawia sie także młoda kobieta podająca się za córke Fullera,Jane- o której nikt wcześniej nidgy nie słyszał. Hall dowiaduje się że jest głownym podejrzanym śmierci przyjaciela, "córka" Fullera znika, Whitney udając sie do eletronicznego świata ginie-na jego miejscu w świecie rzeczywistym budzi się Ashton, zaś sam Hall uświadamia sobie że notatka sporządzona przez Fullera nie dotyczyła tylko wirtualnego świata.... więcej

To find the answers, Hall must cross the boundaries into the simulated reality he has helped create - and confront the astonishing truth about his own existence.Computer scientist Hannon Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl) finds something extremely important. Knowing that he's marked for assassination, he leaves a message in the virtual reality world he's designed, hoping it will be found by colleague Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko). Hall is a suspect in Fuller's murder and indeed finds a bloody shirt in his house, with no recollection of what he did the night before. Hall plunges headlong into Fuller's world (a re-creation of l937 Los Angeles) to try to unravel the slaying and is soon knee-deep in confusion and trouble. What this film lacks in character depth and plot cohesiveness it makes up for in special effects and high concept. Fans of films like Blade Runner, Dark City, eXistenZ, and even the game Sim City should find this appealing. Of course, there's the question of letting the computers do all the heavy lifting in films while the humans walk through the plot (an all-too-familiar scenario in 1999), but the re-creation of 30s Los Angeles is certainly something to see, pallid script and acting or not. The Thirteenth Floor is a stylish modern-day noir that raises questions about technology vs. reality, all the while wrapped up in a murder-mystery story line. -- Jerry Renshaw
