This book will transport you to the greatest metropolises and the most beautiful cities around the globe - from Africa to Asia and "Down Under", and from Europe to north and South America. Experience fascinating insights into the canyon-like streets of modern super-cities, or take a stroll through picturesque lanes all across the continents. These cities have so much to tell- about the greatest events in world history, and also the local stories that constitute the life of a city, every single day.
For almost 600,000 years, human beings have been building shelter to provide protection and tranquility. At first, they were drawn to settle near water, in river valleys and along ocean coasts, because water is the most elemental substance required the sustain life. From the beginning of the Mesolithic period of the Stone Age , approximately 10,000 years ago , the first permanent settlements were established. More and more people came to live in areas that were already settled and discovered the advantages of living and working together, and so the first cities came about. Damascus is considered the first continuously populated city in the world. Out of these cities eventually grew entire nations. Great examples of this development and the early Greek and Phoenician city-states and of course Rome, the prototype of the first truly global metropolis.
But what constitutes a global city today?Several of the cities portrayed in this book are, without question, global cities par excellence, for example Tokyo, New York and London. Not only are they home to millions of people, but they also serve as the most important financial centres worldwide. Other financial centres of great international significance include Paris, Moscow, Shanghai or Chicago. Due to the complex interdependence of the global economy, these cities are at the same time important hubs for travel. In earlier days, extensive railroad networks connected them with the rest of the world, while today they are tightly integrated into the international network of air travel.
In this book, however, you will find not only the powerful giants among the megapolises of the twenty-first century, but also smaller places that boast a long tradition or an interesting development, or whose cultural influence extends beyond their local region.
