Vista Alegre is the fruition of a dream of a man typical of the 19th Century, José Ferreira Pinto Basto.

Influenced by the success of a glass factory in Marinha Grande, Pinto Basto decided to create a factory of “porcelain, glass and chemical processes”.

The founder of the Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory was an individual of many facets; businessman, industrialist, farmer and politician.

This cultured gentleman, protector of the arts, of education and of charitable institutions, occupies a place of true eminence in Portuguese society of the 19th Century.

He began by acquiring, in 1812, the ‘Quinta da Ermida’ (Chapel Estate), near the town of Ílhavo on the edge of the Aveiro estuary.

Shortly afterwards he also bought the surrounding lands which included the Vista Alegre Estate, with a Palace, a Chapel and various buildings around a large square, having ordered the construction of the factory.

The warrant that authorized the functioning of the Vista Alegre Factory was granted in 1824 by D. João VI, giving as benefit “all the favours, privileges and independence that are enjoyed or will be enjoyed in the future, by the National Factories”, and having the founder associating to the factory his fifteen children, becoming the company entitled “Ferreira Pinto & Filhos”.

Just five years later Vista Alegre received the title of Royal Factory, in recognition of its art and industrial success.

The basic mission of the Vista Alegre Museum is to dedicate itself to the collection of objects relating to the history and development of the Vista Alegre Porcelain Factory, since it’s foundation to the present day.

These are equally considered objects of study and material testimony, linked to the social, cultural and economic evolution of Vista Alegre.

The museum is similarly responsible for the maintenance of an archive of drawings, documents and company photographs.

On the other hand, its specific locality, integrated as it is, bestows the Museum with a determining role in the safeguard and construction of local and regional history, through the conservation of individual and collective evidence and records linked to the social and physical environment of Vista Alegre and its inhabitants.

The Vista Alegre collection is divided into the following sections:

• Vista Alegre Ceramic (stone powder or ‘pó de pedra’ and porcelain)

• Glass and Crystal

• Drawings

• Documentation

• Photographic Arquive

Inaugurated in 1964, the Historical Museum of Vista Alegre was the materialization of a project that had been planned since the beginning of production at the Vista Alegre factory. It was, however, under the direction of Gustavo Ferreira Pinto Basto, administrator between 1881 and 1921, which they began systematically accumulating objects that were to be found dispersed around the firm’s outbuildings, and organized to his particular brief.

The first structures emerged around 1922, although the Museum, as a physical and intellectual space, only appeared organized and open to the public in the 1960’s. By 2001 it was subjected to a thorough re-modeling and modernization of the spaces and contents, in an effort to bring the collection closer to the public.
