The Peranakan or native-born Chinese of Southeast Asia are descendants of early Chinese migrants and traders who settled and married local women, forming distinct communities in the bustling commercial hubs around the Straits of Malacca in presentday Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many of them prospered as traders, merchants, miners, craftsmen, planters, manufacturers and tax collectors becoming pillars of the local urban elites in each city. Their imposing shop houses, bungalows and mansions were lavishly furnished with objects imported from Europe and China, as well as finely crafted items from all around the region. These included distinctive furniture and ceramics, textiles and jewelry, footwear and kitchen implements, and many other objets d art created specifically to satisfy rarified Peranakan tastes and aesthetics. Collectively these objects are visible markers of a highly-developed regional culture and are today highly sought-after for their beauty by private collectors, museums, and art dealers around the world. This book is an attempt to describe the range of beautiful objects which the Peranakan Chinese created and enjoyed in their daily lives. Each chapter focuses on a different area of the Peranakan home and presents objects used or found in those spaces, many of which are uniquely Peranakan.
