The youth in Poland has been shaped after 1989 in a new social, political and economic reality. Experience of the totalitarian system, “Solidarnosc” and martial law were known to them only as historical facts and memories of older people. The young Poles have had freedom of political choice and opinion, participated in the free market and Poland's opening to Europe and to the world. This volume presents analyses of their complex situation by Poland's most eminent researchers of youth and educational issues that are mostly concerned with inequality mechanisms, differentiation of life, education opportunities, and also activity and participation of young people in public life. In the introduction, Jacek Kurczewski writes: “The youth presented through the researches published in this collection is the so-called bridge generation […]. Age limits differ, but the bulk of results refers to the bridge generation for whom the period of economic and political transformation was the basic experience in life. Most of them, nevertheless, know almost nothing else than transformation. This is why it is of such interest to know how they are living, who they are and what are they like. After all, the drastic regime change that occurred since 1989 is of great interest not only to the local communities but also to social scientists in general who have the tools to measure and test evolution of changes”.
