In thirty years of investigative reporting Roger Cook has been knocked unconscious a dozen times, needed hospital treatment on almost thirty occasions and has had a score of bones broken by those who have resented his ruthless persistence – or just objected to the fact he exists at all. Indignities suffered on air include having urine poured over his head from an upper-storey window, and being violently attacked with an iron bar.
Cook found his broadcasting feet at a Sydney commercial radio station, then moved on to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, before emigrating to Britain and pursuing his career with the BBC. There he prospered at Radio 4's 'The World at One'. Then, in 1971, he suggested that he carry out an in-depth investigation into a suspect loan company. Tracking down the MD and armed with only a microphone, Cook asked him what his qualifications for running a financial company were, apart from being a former heavy-weight professional wrestler. The man enveloped Cook in a bear hug and threw him down the stairs. The public response to the broadcast was overwhelming. This signalled the creation of 'Checkpoint', his successful radio consumer programme, and 'The Cook report' when it transferred to TV. 'The Cook Report' ran for twelve successful years, attracting huge audiences excited by Cook's unique brand of investigative journalism.
