Like many the author, MAndy Southan was first introduced to tie-dyeing at school, dying a piece of fabric in a bowl. This book explores the materials and methods you need to master. There is a comprehensive section on dyeing. This explains the uses of different dyes, the equipment needed, the different kinds of dyes and the methods of application. There are notes on silk dyeing and on colour too. When doing tie-dye, there are options for binding that affect the finished result. These are all fully explored in depth and the fascinating finished pieces of cloth are shown in colour. Start with simple binding or folding and progress to the lovely technique of mokume or pole binding. In addition, to help you practice the techniques, there are eighteen projects with many variations. This should help you build up a repertoire and improve your technique. A variety of fabrics are used throughout the book. This book is full of colourful photos that capture the imagination. It is beautifully laid out and instructions are easy-to-follow. This is a superb techniques book that fully explores the wonderful art of shibori. Sewing World: Create unique and beautiful fabrics using the ancient Japanese resist dyeing method of shibori. Starting with the basics of materials and equipment she demonstrates how simple household items can be used for binding and securing fabric to create amazing tie-dye effects and textures surfaces. There is a particularly good section on the various types of dyes available and a step-by-step photo guide showing exactly how to use them, plus achieve special effects such as space dyeing. Waterstones ReadCraft: Stunning visual results from simple dyeing techniques that have stood the test of time (over 1000 years in Japan!) All sorts of patterns can emerge with Mandy Southan's traditional and more contemporary tricks. Su Mwamba, Derby branch The Japanese term shibori meaning to wring, squeeze or press now encompasses many different fores of tie-dyeing which all involve shaping and compressing fabric in some way before dyeing it. The author takes the art from beyond the traditional blue and white to create fabrics in an array of colours, patterns and textures. She demonstrates traditional and contemporary techniques (including some personal adaptations). Step-by-step colour photography and instructions demonstrate how to use acid dyes and cold water reactive dyes and various techniques. There are eighteen projects with fabric suggestions for each one and variations showing the effects that can be achieved.-Sew Today Shibori has always intrigued me and never more so than when I paged through this book. I knew some of the basics of tie-dyeing and I was always pleased with my results, but Southan has opened my eyes to a whole new world of colour and design. Most of the designs in this book are based on traditional Japanese methods, but she has included her personal adaptations for creating exciting, contemporary textiles. Before getting into the tying, Southan presents a complete introduction to the materials and the process. She discusses the various dyes and the equipment and tools you will need. She uses lots of photos and provides clear and concise explanations. After laying the groundwork, she presents step-by-step projects and a number of variations to show readers how to make the experience and the results their own. Her process shots are wonderfully illustrative and her fabrics are amazingly colorful and unique. If you were smitten with tie-dyeing in the '70s, you need to take a look at this contemporary twist.-Quilting Arts Mandy takes the beautiful art of shibori but makes it go well beyond the traditional blue and white to create fabrics in a fabulous array of colours, patterns and textures. Clear step-by-step photographs and instructions will leave you wanting to have a go! If you fancy something a little different then this could be the book for you.-Fabrications About the Author Mandy Southan trained at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design where she gained a degree in Fashion and Textile Design.
