Gkwanni Battista Piranesi was first and foremost an architect, al-though he disposed over a vast repertoire of exceptional skills in vari-ous technical fields and arts. A master draftsman of both imaginary and real subjects, as well as of architecture and stage design, Piranesi was also expert in the theory and practice of engineering and geom­etry. In addition, he was an extraordinary etcher. But he was convinced that it was only through architecture that he could exploit all his tal-ents and revolutionize the world, that is, the manner and places in which people lived. To realize his ambition, he moved to Rome, the city that became the focus of his artistic work. For Piranesi, living amidst the remains of ancient Rome was the equivalent of dwelling at the center of civilization. He devoted himself to the rebuilding of modern Rome, which he felt had become degraded, corrupt, frivolous, and unworthy of its past. His goal was nothing less than the restor-

Piranesi war iiberzeugi, dass der Berufdes Archi-tekten es ihm erlaube, die Welt, oder genauer, die Lebensformen und Lebensraume der Geseilschaft auf revolutionare Weise zu verandern. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, Hefi er sich in Rom nieder, und machte diese Stadt zum Mittelpunkt seiner kiinstlerischen Tatigkeit. Se trouver en ce lieu, entoure des ruines de la Rome antique, signifiait a ses yeux se trouver au centre meme de la civilisation.
