Bob Hardisty was undoubtedly the greatest amateur footballer to don an England shirt, and a career in the professional ranks surely awaited him had it not been for the Second World War. However, the professional game's loss was amateur football's gain, for it was during the War that Bob's friendship with the legendary Matt Busby blossomed. When Busby was appointed manager of the Great Britain Football Team for the 1948 London Olympics, he turned to Bob to captain the side, an honour that Bob would enjoy twice more in the Games of 1952 and 1956. A member of the crack amateur football team, Bishop Auckland, Bob's quest to gain an Amateur Cup winners' medal at Wembley became the stuff of legend. Even after retirement, he had much to offer and when the Manchester United team of 1958 was decimated by the horrific air crash in Munich, Bob helped the club fulfil its remaining fixtures.
