Fire, war, changes in taste and the ruthless march of "urban improvement" have tragically affected an important segment of our cultural heritage—the architecture of the American past. As a rule, this destruction takes place unwittingly: we do not recognize what has been destroyed until it is too late to do anything to prevent it. Yet there are also many cases where, even despite awareness by enlightened people, destruction could not be stopped.
This present volume offers a unique guided tour through America's architectural past, all of which is either no longer in existence, or has been altered so greatly as to destroy its original form and beauty. It contains more than 275 clear photographs of old churches, dwelling houses, public buildings, business structures and other forms of architecture, ranging mostly along the Eastern seaboard, from Maine to Georgia.
Many of these buildings were important historically: the New South Church of Boston; the Sanders House of Salem, Mass., where Bell worked upon the telephone; the Governor Craddock house, built in 1639; Montpelier, home of James Madison; Red Hill, Patrick Henry's home; the Grange, built by Alexander Hamilton; Gouverneur Morris's Mansion; the original White House (before it was extensively remodeled), and many other buildings. Other buildings, selected by John Mead Howells, were beautiful examples of the best architectural work of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Some were erected by architects and builders whose names are no longer known; others were built by such giants as Charles Bulfinch and Samuel Mclntire.
Most of the photographs which Mr. Howells assembled have never been made available to the public before this book, but were published in rare periodicals or deposited in architectural museums. In addition to showing full buildings from the most advantageous position, many of these photos show the beautiful detail of doorways, stairways, paneling, and other interior structures. As a result, this book cannot help but be a source of inspiration to every designer, architect, or lover of the American past.
Unabridged, slightly altered republication of 1931 edition. Introduction by Fiske Kimball, Curator of the Pennsylvania Museum of Art. 245 plates, mostly full-page, containing 281 photos and 9 drawings, floorplans, etc. New index prepared for this edition, xvii -)- 248pp. 7-7/8 x 10-3/4.
