The subject of this auction is a unique instrument, one of the very few clarinets of this type in the world! The Basset Clarinet in Bb!!! Most basset clarinets available on the market are tuned in A (mostly for Mozart’s concertos) but this particular intrument was made on special, individual order and lets you play in the traditional Bb key. The clarinet is a result of almost one year’s work of a remarkable maker of historical woodwinds, Stephen Fox from Canada (see more at HYPERLINK "http://www.sfoxclarinets.com" http://www.sfoxclarinets.com). This extraordinary instrument was made by way of conversion, by grafting an extension onto the lower joint and adding the basset keywork. The basis for the conversion was a perfect specimen of the Buffet R13 clarinet (produced 2003), purchased and tested by Stephen Fox himself. The instrument is as good as new, offers perfect covering and tuning in all registers and, what is especially important, the low notes have a clean and deep sound. The clarinet plays with a warm, round sound with crystal clear highs and has excellent emmission. The keys are nickel-plated and the woodwork is Buffet’s Grenadil ebony. A leather-covered case, abdomen brace (for more convenient thumb movement) and neck strap are included. All this at a bargain price. I strongly recommend it.
