                    Preface.
This second volume continues and completes the course of English begun in the first volume.
Our plan of instruction will have been successfully carried out, if teacher and pupil, at the conclusion of the first book, are in a position to talk to each other in simple sentences on the various subjects of ordinary conversation. Unless the pupil has a thorough grasp of the elements contained in the first part, he will find neither interest nor profit in beginning the present volume, The aim of our first volume was to provide him with materials; from the very beginning of this second volume he will begin to buiłd with them.
For this purpose, and to make the pupiFs task as simple as possible, we have chosen subjects of eoiwersation which are at once easy, useful, and interesting. We łiope that we have thus been able to avoid the monotony which is such an unfortunate feature of many similar text-books. Especially as regards grammar? we have taken great pains to draw up rules and arrange examples in a way most likely to help both the understanding and the memory of the pupil. The numerous examples have been chosen as types, and the teacher will supplement them as he thinks best.
The reading pieces at the end consist of anecdotes and short stories designed to introduce the pupil to specimens of a sustained written style in contrast to the conversational style of the earlier part of the book. They are all extracts
